    Vivaldi Concertos by Candlelight

  • When
    2 March 19:30 - 22:30
  • Welcome to the New Year! Come along and join London Concertante for our 2018 Scottish season opener at St Giles' High Kirk, Edinburgh! The first of our 8 concert programme at the famous church this year, we’ll be performing a selection of some of Vivaldi’s most loved and well known concertos for strings by candlelight.

Kicking off our programme with an audience favourite Concerto for 2 Violins in A minor by the Italian Maestro, London concertante will perform a somewhat unseasonal “Summer” from the Four Seasons, Vivaldi’s mesmerically virtuosic concerto for Two Violins and Cello in D minor, and “La Folia”. Translating literally as “the madness”, La Folia was one of the most popular musical themes across Europe in the 17th century. Implemented and arranged across the continent by composers in France, Spain, Portugal, and Italy in numerous compositions, Vivaldi’s own ‘madness’ takes the form of a Trio Sonata in D minor for two violins and cello. Opening with a statement of the theme in a relatively calm fashion, it soon becomes clear, through an accelerating tempo and dissonant harmonies, that the composition (and the players!) are not very stable(!). As the music becomes increasingly agitated, it eventually gives way the ‘Folia’ theme once more, emerging from within like a pestering psychotic thought, with our trio of instrumentalists frantically demonstrating a gripping visual and auditorial manifestation of Baroque madness!
