Carving workshop: learn how to make a wooden butter knife or ‘Smorkniv’
Always wanted to learn how to carve or whittle but never found the time? We are back at the lovely Secret Herb Garden for this great introduction to woodcarving with Forhands Studio. No prior experience nescessary, just an interest and eagerness to learn!
The butter knife is a great first project in woodcarving, and has an interesting history. In many Scandinavian countries it is a tradition for each member of the household to have their own bespoke wooden butter knife, often one they carved themselves. It is customary to use only these wooden knives for butter, and you could risk offending your host if you used a metal knife instead.
In this workshop you will learn:
How to make a wooden butter knife from a timber blank, including: Design and marking out, safe carving etiquette, how to hold and use a whittling knife, a range of different knife strokes, finishing techniques, features and properties of timber and, time allowing, the basics of Pyrography.
Working from a piece of beautiful green timber sourced locally from Falkland Estate, you will design and mark out your butter knife, carve the shape, finish it with sandpaper and custom made food grade oil, then have the chance to add pattern and detail using the art of Pyrography. You will finish the workshop with good grasp of carving skills, and a lovely handcarved butter knife of your own to take home!
The workshop will be run from 10.30- 2.30 with time for teas and coffees in the Secret Herb Garden cafe.
