  • This lecture explores the reasons why Edinburgh residents, and Scots in general, lived in high rise buildings. The explanation rejects Youngson’s – and others’ – idea of a planned New Town and provides a reinterpretation based around landowners’ strategies and homeowners’ vested interests. Money, widows, solicitors, builders, Heriot’s, and the Town Council are the cast in a drama that has shaped the form of town and cities throughout Scotland for 250 years. Professor Richard Rodger is

Professor of Economic and Social History, History, Classics and Archaeology, University of Edinburgh.
